how to turn off automatic updates in windows 10

From the premiere of the operating system Windows 10 5 years have passed. This system has brought many new features and improvements, but it has one particularly significant drawback. Microsoft has introduced automatic updates in its software that are quite difficult to disable, but it is not impossible. How to disable updates in Windows 10?

System updates are essential. They often implement security patches so that the data on our computers remains safe. Sometimes, however, a situation arises that makes us not want to update our system at the moment for various reasons. For example, the update turns out to have errors that negatively affect the comfort of using the system or its security. In this case, we want to delay it until the manufacturer has dealt with the problems.

How to disable Windows Update

Automatic updates in the most popular edition of the system, i.e. Windows 10 Home, cannot be turned off, but they can be significantly delayed. The first way is as follows:

  1. We run settings system and enter the tab Updates and Security
  2. In the menu on the left click on Windows Update, and then on the right side click on Change active hours of use
  3. Here you can indicate the hours of active use, thanks to which the system will not start updating during these hours, only outside of them.

This method will not prevent updates, but make them take place at specific times, which will make them less bothersome. The second way is to limit the download of updates. To do this:

  1. We enter in System settings and select a bookmark Network and Internet
  2. Select in the menu on the left Wi-Fi and then the network we use and enter into it Advanced options
  3. In place of Tariff connection next to the option Set as metered connection set the switch to the position Included.

At this point, the system receives information that the network to which we are connected has a limited data packet and automatically stops downloading any updates. This setting is assigned to a specific Wi-Fi network, so if we connect to another network and do not set this option again, Windows 10 will start downloading updates.

Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, and Education users can turn off automatic updates. To do this:

  1. Press the button combination Start + R. Enter in the window that appears gpedit.msc.
  2. This is how the Local Group Policy Editor has started. In the editor window that appears, enter Computer configurationAdministrative TemplatesWindows componentsWindows Update Service.
  3. Now you should find the option Configuring automatic updates and double-click on it. You can completely disable all updates here, but it is not a recommended option as in that case we will have to manually download and install all updates. This can be done by downloading the appropriate version of the Windows 10 update assistant.

While automatic updates haven't been warmly welcomed by Windows 10 users, it's important to remember that by skipping them completely, we put your data at risk. In the case of critical system fixes, we can skip such updates, and an unauthorized person can take advantage of this fact.
